Mercedes-Benz has announced a collaboration with semiconductor startup Athos Silicon to accelerate the development of next-generation chip standards. The partnership focuses on advancing autonomous driving computing through scalable chiplet architecture, with the goal of setting benchmarks for future high-performance computing platforms across the automotive industry.
Mercedes-Benz first began research into chiplet-based computing solutions in 2020 at its Research & Development North America (MBRDNA) division. The early work led to the creation of Athos Silicon, a spin-off founded by former engineers at MBRDNA. By establishing Athos as an independent company, Mercedes-Benz has enabled the technology to expand beyond automotive use cases, while contributing intellectual property and capital support to help scale the innovation across wider ecosystems.
Athos Silicon now develops its modular mSoC™ platform, which emphasizes flexible performance scaling, faster development cycles, and safety-by-design principles. This approach is expected to play a key role in shaping autonomous driving computing for future vehicles, while also supporting broader industry applications.
Markus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer and Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, noted that open chiplet approaches such as UCIe™ show strong potential for building future high-performance compute architectures. He emphasized that Athos Silicon will follow its own path as an independent entity, continuing to develop concepts first initiated within Mercedes-Benz’s research efforts.
Since 2023, Mercedes-Benz has been the first automotive OEM to join the UCIe™ Consortium, contributing directly to the formation of new industry-wide chiplet standards. The collaboration with Athos Silicon builds on this leadership and strengthens the company’s position as a co-creator of next-generation computing frameworks. These standards are designed to define the blueprint for autonomous driving computing, supporting advanced safety, performance, and automation technologies for the coming years.
By combining its early-stage research with Athos Silicon’s independent development platform, Mercedes-Benz aims to accelerate the adoption of scalable chiplet technology. This cooperation highlights how autonomous driving computing can evolve into a cross-industry standard, creating new possibilities for both automotive and non-automotive applications.
The partnership represents a strategic step in shaping the future of mobility, where autonomous driving computing will play a defining role in vehicle performance and safety innovations worldwide.
