BMW’s Performance Engines Get Significant Power for Autumn 2025
New Petrol Powertrain Arrives for M240i xDrive, 3 Series, and 4 Series Models, Offering More Torque and Reduced Emissions BMW is rolling out a series of significant model updates for autumn 2025, centering on a substantial revision to the petrol powertrains powering its entry-level BMW M performance models. This update brings increased power and improved fuel efficiency to key models, including the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, as well as performance variants across the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series ranges.
This strategic move by the German manufacturer aims to blend enhanced dynamic performance with better environmental credentials. The evolution of BMW’s Performance Engines philosophy is clearly demonstrated in these latest revisions. At the heart of the changes lies an upgraded 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine.
This revised unit, which includes a mild hybrid system contributing 9 kW/12 hp , now delivers a total output of 288 kW/392 hp. This marks an overall 13 kW/18 hp power increase compared to its predecessor. Torque figures also see a notable improvement, climbing by 40 Nm to a maximum of 540 Nm.
Key Performance and Efficiency Gains Detailed

The key revisions and output gains delivered by BMW’s Performance Engines are detailed to ensure clarity on the new power delivery and efficiency standards. The updated powertrain will be fitted to the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan and Touring models , as well as the BMW M440i xDrive Coupé, Convertible, and Gran Coupé. The BMW M240i xDrive Coupé also receives this more powerful engine. The increase in output directly translates to more dynamic performance across these models.
This revised powertrain makes the acceleration more responsive, a hallmark of BMW’s Performance Engines philosophy. Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h is shaved by 0.1 seconds for each model. As a result, the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan can now complete the benchmark sprint in just 4.3 seconds.
Despite the power boost, all updated models benefit from significant engine efficiency improvements. The BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, for example, sees its WLTP fuel consumption drop from a previous 8.8−8.7 litres/100 km to 8.0 litres/100 km. Furthermore, CO 2 emissions have been reduced from 200−199 g/km to 183 g/km for the M240i xDrive Coupé.
Added Technology and Practicality

Across the Range Beyond the engine room, BMW is implementing a host of new features and enhancements across other key models. The optional Adaptive LED Headlights on the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and BMW i4 now include laser rear lights. These Adaptive LED Headlights are also newly available as a standalone option for the BMW 420i, BMW 420d, and BMW 420d xDrive. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé gains the new Cape York Green as an optional exterior colour, available with the M Sport design or M Sport package.
The BMW X3 sees its standard equipment enhanced with rear headrests and side sections of the second row of seats now finished in the upholstery colour when ordered with Veganza or Merino materials. For the BMW 5 Series family, including the BMW i5 and BMW M5 Sedan and Touring variants, a practical coat hook is now included as standard on the B-pillar trim.
In the digital sphere, BMW Connected Drive receives various improvements. The My BMW app will feature an enhanced Charging Guide in its Explore tab, offering relevant help on charging aspects. BMW Maps charge-optimised route planning for all-electric vehicles is now being extended to BMW vehicles with Operating System 8 and 8.5 in several countries, including Greece, Romania, Serbia, and Bulgaria.
